Cocktail Recipe for making a Salty Dog Gin at Home
A wonderfully named cocktail that evokes images of a bright, refreshing day at the beach, the Salty Dog is a classic summertime drink that is both delicious and invigorating. A rejuvenating blend of gin (which gives the drink its alcoholic kick) and grapefruit juice (which lends a bittersweet citrus flavour to the cocktail), with a salt-crusted rim for added flavour, the drink is served in tall cocktail glasses for maximum visual impact.
Preparation Time: 2 to 5 minutes
Serving Size: Serves 1 person
Utensils: Tall cocktail glass, saucer, long-handled spoon or stirring rod
Ingredients:
– 2 oz gin
– 4 oz grapefruit juice
– Salt (preferably kosher) in a saucer
– 1 medium-sized lemon
– Ice cubes or crushed ice
Instructions
-
1
Wet the rim of the tall cocktail glass
Start with a fresh lemon and cut it into two equal halves – then, proceed to cut these into wedges. Reserve one wedge for garnishing the drink later on, and use another wedge to wet the rim of your cocktail glass. Hold it by the rind, and rub it against the rim, until it is completely wet. This wet rim will help the salt crust stick. -
2
Coat the rim of the glass
Next, spread an even layer of kosher salt in your saucer. Then, flip the cocktail glass over and dip its rim in the saucer filled with salt. Rotate the glass gently, allowing it to collect more salt, so that it is entirely coated and crusted with it. -
3
Ice up
Once the cocktail glass has been coated, flip it so that it is the right side up, and fill it 3/4 of the way with ice cubes, or crushed ice. In addition to cooling the drink, these will add a fair amount of visual appeal, as they clink about in the tall cocktail glass. -
4
Pour in gin and grapefruit juice
Now, once the glass is ready, start preparing the drink. Top the ice cubes with 2 oz of gin and 4 oz of chilled grapefruit juice. -
5
Stir well
Once all the ingredients have been added to the glass, grab a stirring rod, and stir the drink until all the ingredients are mixed and the cocktail is completely blended. -
6
Garnish your refreshing salty dog
Finally, garnish your drink with the lemon wedge you reserved earlier – since the rim of the glass is crusted with salt, you might want to just float the lemon wedge on top of the drink. Your refreshing Salty Dog is now ready – serve chilled.
