Natural History Museum is situated in South Kensington Area of London along with 2 other very famous museums in the area, including Victoria & Albert Museum and the Science Museum. The collections related to Natural specimens and Earth Sciences have been held here, and it is among the largest museums in the world, holding more than 70 million items. The main purpose of this museum is research in the areas of Zoology, Mineralogy, Entomology, Palaeontology and Botany. The museum has produced some quality and world renowned researches in these areas. The collection of dinosaur skeletons present in the museum earns it great popularity in the world as compared to the other items it holds. Initially the museum was part of the British Museum but it was later separated from it and established as an independent museum. It is a worth-visiting place, especially for students of all the natural science departments mentioned above.

History of Natural History Museum
British government bought the collection of Ulster doctor Sir Hans Sloane to create the foundation of the museum, while the purchase itself was funded by a lottery. The collection of Sloane included animals, human skeletons and dried plants and they were then kept in Bloomsbury in 1756, which was the place for the museum at that time. Then the collection started increasing and different artists contributed to it. The museum was first opened for the general public in 1881. -

Tickets and Entry Requirements
As the sole purpose of the museum is to research, therefore, the entry is free. But during special exhibitions you may have to pay a nominal fee for them. -

Operational Hours
The Museum opens from 10:00 am to 5:50 pm, seven days a week and is closed from the 24th to 26th of December for the Christmas holidays. -

How to Get There
By Tube
The Museum is located at a walking distance from the South Kensington tube station, which is served by Piccadilly, District and Circle lines. On leaving the station, head north on Cromwell Place towards Thurloe Street and after 187 feet, turn left onto the Cromwell Place. After 354 feet, turn left onto Cromwell Street and then take right turn and follow the same road for another 259 feet. The museum will be on your right. View Map and Directions
