The Tower Bridge of London
A bascule bridge over the longest river of England, River Thames, was built in 8 years. On 30th June 1894, a 244 meter long bridge by the name of Tower Bridge was opened which has now become London’s iconic symbol. This suspension bridge has two towers each with a height of 213 feet and the distance between them is 200 feet. In order to avoid any obstruction for huge ships, this bascule bridge was constructed which is raised at an angel of 83 degree and weighs 1,000 tons each. Tower Bridge is 143 feet above the river. Tower Bridge is being maintained by the Bridge House Estate who owns four other bridges of London.

History:
With an increase in the commercial development, the East End of London notified that a new river crossing is required. Due to the arrival of tall-masted ships, a Special Bridge or Subway Committee under the supervision of Sir Albert Joseph decided to build a bascule bridge. Designer Sir Horace Jones proposed the design of the bridge that was later approved. The construction initiated in the year 1886, with the supervision of five contractors; Sir John Jackson who laid the foundation of the bridge, Baron Armstrong played a main role in constructing a successful system of hydraulics, Sir H.H. Bartlett William Webster, along with Sir William Arrol & Co were also part of the construction team.
King Edward VII along with his wife Princess of Wales, Alexandra of Denmark officially participated in the opening ceremony of Tower Bridge.

How to Get There:
By Tube:
Fifteen minutes walk is required to reach from London Bridge station to the Tower Bridge. The distance between the two locations is 0.7 miles. You will have to start walking in northeast direction on the London Bridge St. After covering 253 feet, continue your walk on the London Borough High St/A3 and then move on to Duke Street Hill/A200. Continue to follow this road and you will be at your destination after covering 0.1 miles distance. For further information, check this link.
By Bus:
Bermondsey, Tower Bridge Road Tooley St (N-bound) is the nearest bus stop. Heading north, walk for a minute or so and after 259 feet you will be there on the Great Tower Bridge.
