National Gallery in London

The National Gallery is an art gallery that was found in 1824 and has a total floor space of 46,396 square meters. This popular venue is located in Trafalgar Square – which  is one of the busiest places in London. Millions of  tourists flock to the area every year and enjoy some the best exhibitions of European paintings in the world. The National Gallery has a collection of more than 2,300 paintings which were created by famous artists whose works date from the mid-13th century to 1900. These rare paintings include works by Duccio, Masaccio, Uccello, Piero della Francesca, Leonardo, Giorgione, Michelangelo, Caravaggio, Vermeer, Chardin, Klimt, Rousseau and Redon. National Gallery is devoted to educating students about art and allows people admitted to the Gallery to study the paintings collection and make copies of the art.

    History of National Gallery

    National Gallery has a long history dating back to the llate 18th century. To initially start a public gallery, the first 38 paintings' collection came from John Julius Angerstein that were publicly displayed in Angerstein House. The collection of paintings was growing quickly and the need for a new gallery arouse. In 1832, William Wilkins designed the gallery but because of people's criticism in 1869, E.M. Barry modified the design by adding seven new exhibition rooms including the inspiring dome. In the 1870s, the gallery received two paintings' collection by famous Dutch and British artists and to house them, the building had to be made larger. Many paintings were moved out to a new gallery called the Tate Museum of British Art. In 1985, a new wing was added to this gallery to show the entire early Renaissance collection and it was opened in 1991 for public.

    Tickets and Entry

    Entry to the gallery is free of cost but if you want to attend special exhibitions, you have to buy tickets. The prices of tickets are different depending upon the exhibition which you want to attend.

    Operational Hours

    The National Gallery opens from 10:00 am till 6:00 pm daily and from 10:00 am till 9:00 pm on Friday. The gallery remains closed on 1st January and 24-26 December.

    How to Get There National Gallery

    By Tube:

    Charing Cross is the nearest tube station to the National Gallery and is 0.1 mile away which is 2 minutes walk away. On leaving the tube station, head in the northwest direction on Northumberland Ave. From there, at the roundabout, take the second exit on Trafalgar Square. Then take the first left turn to reach another left turn and then turn right to find the National Gallery in front of you. Directions from Charing Cross Tube Station to National Gallery.

    By Bus:

    Trafalgar Square (Stop C) is the closest bus stop to the National Gallery and by walk, this 292 ft distance can be covered in one minute.
