Kew Palace London

Kew Palace is an elegant British Royal Palace which stands tall in Kew Gardens right on the banks of River Thames in London. In past, there were four Royal Palaces situated in the Kew area; three of them were known as Kew Palace, whereas the name of the fourth one is not mentioned in any records but it is known to be also called the Kew Palace. Three of them have not survived, whereas the one which was once known as Fourth Kew Palace is still open for visitors. The Historic Royal Palaces, which is an independent charity, takes care of this Palace by making use of the funding issued by the Crown or British Government.

    History

The current Kew palace was once a mansion which was owned by the Levett family. In 1734, King George III took that mansion on lease from Levett heirs and later in 1781, he bought this place for £20,000. This place was supposed to be a temporary residence for King George III while he waited for his new palace to be built but it took longer than expected and George III retired from public life. Later in 1828, the new palace plan was cancelled and the shell was demolished. Since then, the Royal Family resided in Kew Palace (known as Dutch House at that time). Queen Charlotte also died in the Dutch House in 1818, after that Queen Victoria held the throne and she gave this palace to the nation in 1837.
