How to Adjust a W-4 Tax Form
Under the United States of America (USA) taxation law, if family circumstances of a taxpayer change, the department of IRS should be informed to adjust the W-4 form accordingly. The form, which contains the income details and family circumstance, helps the department to determine the amount of taxable income from the person’s paycheck. Leaving the department in dark about the change in family circumstances is an offence and the taxpayer can be fined under the taxation law.

1
New W-4 Form
As soon as your family circumstances change, you should fill out a W-4 form and send it to the IRS to adjust it accordingly. You can request the form from the office to be posted at your address. Otherwise, you can download it from the website of IRS. Mention all details carefully and correctly. -
2
Appropriate Changes
No matter how much your circumstances have changed, you should put them in the new form correctly. All appropriate changes will be adjusted in the new form and it is possible you might get a higher amount in the tax refund. It is not always that the IRS will squeeze out more money out of your income. -
3
Give Form to Employer
After filling out the form correctly, hand it over to your employer so they are informed about the change of your circumstances. They can then file the form to IRS and your taxable income and other details in the form are adjusted. You should not delay in informing the change of circumstances to your worker. If the time for W-4 form submission lapses, late sending of it will not be taken into account and no adjustment will be made in the form. -
4
Late Adjustment
If you somehow have not filed the adjustment form in time, get the form 1040-X, fill it out and send to the department. In this case the time for W-4 form has lapsed and no adjustment will be made even if you send it now to the department. The right way is to fill out a 1040-X form explaining reasons and filing details and send it to the IRS. You can directly download the form from the IRS website.
