First of all, you need to decide whether you want to use lava rocks as fixtures among your plants or you will use them as mulch.

If you plan to use them as fixtures, then you should try to purchase large-size rocks, as they are lighter in weight and easy to maintain. On the other hand, if you want to use the lava rocks as mulch, then you should try to buy small pieces.

Before you use the rocks as mulch, you should remove any weeds or unnecessary grass surrounding the plant. The rocks will prevent the weeds and grass to grow. Still, it is best to remove them, as you would never like to see any weeds poking from the rocks.

If you have light-coloured flowers in your garden, then you should try to place a large-sized lava rock near them, as it will look great there. You can also place it near a medium-sized plant.

Because of the rock’s lightweight makeup, the air and water will easily pass through them, if you use them as mulch. Therefore you should distribute the rocks evenly, at the sides of the plant, while making sure that you cannot see the surface of the ground from any part of the mulch. Otherwise, you may not be able to get the perfect landscaping look which you want.
