How to Build a Wood Table Top Podium

If you need a table top podium to prop up your speaking material, you can either purchase the podium from a local store or you can make one at home. Fortunately, making a wood table top podium is a very simple task so you will not require any specialised tools. Here is what you will need to make a wood table top podium at home.

Things Required:

– 3/4-by-3-by-12-inch hardwood plywood board
– Pencil
– Straight edge
– Table saw
– Fine grit sandpaper
– 3/4-by-12-by-18-inch hardwood plywood board
– Wood glue
– Damp rag
– Finish nails, 1 box
– Hammer
– 1-by-1-by-18 hardwood strip
– Wood finish of your choice
– Paint brush

Instructions

  • 1

On a 3/4-by-3-by-12-inch hardwood plywood board, draw a straight line starting at one top corner and ending at the opposite bottom corner. Use a pencil and a straight edge for drawing the diagonal line.

  • 2

You now have to cut the board in equal triangular halves. Accomplish this by cutting the board with a table saw along the diagonal line that you drew earlier. Try to keep the cut as neat as possible. These triangular halves will serve as podium sides.

  • 3

Sand the podium sides with the grain along the cut until they are perfectly smooth. Use fine grit sandpaper for this purpose.

  • 4

Place the podium sides on a flat surface such that they are parallel to each other. The distance between the podium sides has to be 18 inches. The sides that were cut should be placed on the surface to make the podium sides stand upright.

  • 5

You now have to affix the podium top. To accomplish this, apply wood glue along the top edges of the podium sides and then place the 3/4-by-12-by-18-inch hardwood plywood board on the sides. Remove excess glue by wipe cleaning the podium top and sides with a damp rag.

  • 6

Hammer finishing nails in the podium sides through the podium top. Space the finishing nails approximately two inches away from each other.

  • 7

Now you need to create a space in the table top podium where you can place books and other material relative to your presentation. Apply wood glue all along the podium’s top bottom edge and affix the 1-by-1-by-18 hardwood strip. Get rid of excess glue by wipe cleaning with a damp rag. To make sure that the hardwood strip stays in place, drive finish nails through it from the podium’s top with a hammer.

Use a paintbrush to apply finish to the wooden podium. Allow time for the finish to dry completely before using the podium.
