How to Plan a Trip to the Library with Children
To most children, visiting a library might seem a drag idea and they might not be particularly exhilarated when you make the announcement. This is something natural, because of all the books we make them read at school and home. However, children should not be deprived of the academic richness of this centuries old institution which can be a great place of learning for them. If you introduce them to it in the right manner, they will receive it with enthusiasm and interest. Look up at the libraries in your city. These could be public libraries which usually have a large public collection or public ones with exclusive selection. Select one library you can visit with the children. Collect information about the library. Try to select one that has children literature available for your kids. Also check the opening dates and timings.

Inform the children of general library rules. The library is a place of sanctity and is quiet so that everyone can read in peace. The kids should not run around or shout to each other. They should treat the books with care because they are shared and have to be read by other people. Inculcate these habits in them through regular visits so that they do not disturb the peace of the place.

Dress up children in comfortable clothes and footwear. They can take their book marks and a small notepad to write a report. Most libraries do not allow any food items or drinks inside the premises because of book safety rules. So avoid buying anything before the visit. You can always take the kids for a bite after the visit.

Once there, take the children to the kids section. Discuss with them the titles of the books which are appealing. Encourage them to select one or two books. Sit down and read with them a couple of pages. You can ask them to write an observational report about the trip and their learning from them. If the kids are interested in lending a book, talk to the library administration about the membership card and how to get one. You will need a card for lending the book but most libraries will allow you to read as much as you want.
