How to Master Playing-Card Terminology
Many card players and magicians have adapted slang terms when dealing with cards besides the normal playing card terms. In case you are going to entertain the audience by showing cool magic tricks, you need to know master playing-card terminologies. By this you’ll seem more reliable and credible in front of the crowd. You can also impress your fellow card players, your friends and colleagues by knowing playing-card terminologies. There are some simple playing cards terminologies which you need to know. Case – the package holding the cards
You need to know about the word case which refers to the package which holds the cards. Many people call this package a box but the right word or when dealing with magic tricks, you need to refer it as case. Remember that even if the package is a simple cardboard box, you need to call it case. -

Sides of the cards
Now coming towards the sides of the cards, you need to call the ‘face’ of the card on which there is a number or picture drawn. On the other hand, the side where there is a pattern or decoration printed, it is known as the ‘back.’ -

Top and bottom
Next you need to know is the top and bottom of the deck. The side where patterns or decoration are facing up, it is known as the top of a deck. The side where the face of a deck is showing is known as the ‘bottom.’ -

Court cards and spot cards
There are different types of cards in a deck. Cards with pictures such as kings, queens and jacks are known as the ‘court cards’ while the cards with numbers are mostly known as the ‘number cards.’ In magic terminology, number cards are known as ‘spot cards.’ -

Suit
Suit is the set of cards with same symbol e.g. a suit of hearts. There are four suits in a deck i.e. spades, clubs, hearts and diamonds. Remember that in every suit there are 13 cards which consist of an ace, a king, a queen, a jack and the numbers two to ten. -

Cut
A cut is when you take a card from either top or bottom of the deck and place it on the other side of the deck. Remember that it is not any shuffling of the cards.
