How to Refinish Cabinets with Stain and Glaze

Are you planning to refresh the look of old cabinets in your kitchen? Consider staining and glazing the cabinets to give a huge boost to the decor of your kitchen. You do not have to be an expert to refinish cabinets but it will be a time consuming task however, because of the fact that you will have to wait overnight twice. Here is what you will need to refinish kitchen cabinets with stain and glaze.

Things Required:

– Screwdriver
– Newspapers
– Medium-grade sandpaper
– Small edging power sander
– Painters tape
– Rubber gloves
– Paintbrush
– Wood stain
– Paper towels
– Wood glaze
– Polyurethane finish

Instructions

    Detach the cabinet doors by unscrewing the hinges while someone is holding the doors in place. Empty the cabinets and remove the cabinet knobs from the doors. Set aside the knobs in a safe place because you will have to reinstall them later.

    You will need to use a workbench such a covered patio to stain and glaze the cabinet doors. Alternatively, you can cover a fairly large area on of the kitchen floor with newspapers or a piece of drop cloth. Place the cabinet doors on the workspace.

    Prepare that cabinets and cabinet doors for staining and glazing by sanding them with medium-grade sandpaper. For tight areas inside the cabinet, you can make use of a small edging power sander. Continue to sand until both the doors and the cabinets are perfectly smooth.

    Use a vacuum cleaner to get rid of leftover wood dust. Alternatively, you can use a cloth to wipe clean the doors and the cabinets. Before moving on to the next step, ensure that all the wood dust particles have been removed.

    Cover wall edges directly below or around the cabinets with painters tape to prevent them from being stained and glazed. Cover the cabinets in a light coat of stain. Allow around 3 to 4 minutes for the stain to set in. Remove excess stain by wipe cleaning the cabinets with paper towels. Stain the cabinet doors in the same way.

    Allow at least 24 hours for the stain coat to dry completely. You now need to apply a light coat of wood glaze on the stained cabinets and cabinet doors. The glaze coat is applied in the same way as the stain coat. The only difference is that glaze will need more time to set in properly.

    Allow another 24 hours, this time for the glaze coat to dry. Finally, seal you work with a coat of polyurethane finish. Apply polyurethane finish in slow strokes along the cabinet lines. Reattach the doors that in their proper place.
