How to Shoot a Traditional Bow

Archery has been around for as long as people can remember. It has been one of the most popular methods to hunt and capture food within the past, and as time has progressed, it has continued to evolve.

Archery has gone on to evolve into a sport with people competing with each other looking to prove just who is the best archer out there.

Despite it appearing to be very easy, using a traditional bow is no joke. These weapons may seem like they aren’t much but they pack a very mean punch. They can go on and kill animals, which is why if you don’t use them properly, you could end up injuring yourself or anyone around you quite significantly.

Instructions

  • 1

Before you do anything, go ahead and put the arrow on the string. This should be done by placing it on the left side of the bow if you are right handed and the other way round for a left handed person. Now there is going to be an arrow rest for the arrow, so rest the arrow on that. If there is no arrow rest,  you will have to use your hand to rest the arrow on it.

  • 2

Now take your index and middle finger and place them on the end of the arrow in order to get a firm secure grip on the string. Remember to use a maximum of three fingers to grab the string. Also remember not to hold the string beyond the first joint of these fingers that you are using to hold the string.

  • 3

While holding the bow, hold it so that it won’t fall out of your hand when you use it. Place your supporting foot forward, which would be the left foot if you are a right handed person. Now bend your knees just a little.

  • 4

Pull the string till it reaches your mouth, while you look to extend your arm that is holding the bow.

  • 5

Look down the arrow to aim. Do not tilt your head while aiming and do not let your elbow, on the arm that is holding the string drop below the level of your shoulder.

  • 6

Now release the arrow after you have gone on to aim, and make sure there is a quick release. A slow release would impact the flight of the arrow and would see if go off target.
