How to stop a Bleeding Nose

If you suffer a nasal injury due to getting hit, picking your nose too vigorously or blowing too hard, you end up with a bleeding nose. This can be both a painful and scary experience, with the latter having a lot to do with the sight of blood and that too coming straight from the nose. While this is a common occurrence and rarely fatal, leaving it untreated or treating it the wrong way can lead to some seriously complication. Before you can get proper treatment for your nose, your first priority should be to stop the bleeding, which can be done in a number of ways.

The first thing that you need to do when you have a bleeding nose is to hold a soft cloth or tissue to your nose. Holding a cloth or tissue right under your nostrils will help you to minimise the mess and consequently reduce the irritation, if any, that it causes. Remember to use a clean piece of cloth or a soft tissue, as using a dirty cloth or rough tissue will make the bleeding worse and even cause infection. Make sure you get the cloth washed immediately after you remove it from your nose, so that somebody does not accidently end up touching it.

Pinch your nostril while leaning forward to shut them. Keep them shut for around five to ten minutes in order to speed up the blood clotting process and prevent the blood from running. While you are keeping your nostrils pinched, you will not be able to breathe from your nose, obviously. You will have to continue breathing from your mouth. Leaning forward will keep the blood from running into the throat. Think happy thoughts during this time to keep your blood pressure low.

You can also stop the bleeding in your nose with the help of a cold compress. By applying the cold compress on the bridge of your nose, you will be able to constrict the blood vessels. This will consequently slow down the bleeding. In order to apply a cold compress, soak a wash-cloth in cold water and press it over the bridge of your nose. Alternatively, you can make an ice-pack and hold it on top of your nose. Both cubes and crushed ice work fine.

If the bleeding does not stop after 15-20 minutes despite pinching the nose, using a tissue or cloth and applying a cold compress over the bridge of the nose, you should call the doctor or pay him a visit. In case your nose started to bleed after a head injury, or if you suspect that your nose may have broken after taking a hit, rush to the doctor immediately.
