How to Build a Wooden Drying Rack
If you have a very small laundry room, the best way to dry your clothes is to hang them up in a wooden drying rack. This drying rack, also called a clotheshorse, hangs on the wall just like a wall hanging and opens a bit to let you hang clothes on it.
Things Required:
– (2) ½”x2″ poplar boards
– 2’x2′ birch ½” thick
– Sash lock
– (2) Narrow loose pin hinges
– (2) 3/8″ dowels that are 48″ long
– D rings
– Primer
– Paint
– Paintbrush
– (3) Cabinet door knobs
– Bracketed hinge
– 3/8″ drill bit
– Drill
– Nails
– Screwdriver
– Saw
– Mallet
– Tape measure

Measure the 2x2 feet birch board two inches up from the bottom and mark it with a pencil. You can mark your board a little above or below the proposed length, depending upon your preference; however, make sure the upper section is clearly larger than the lower one and the latter has enough space to add knobs.

Measure the length of the upper section and cut 1/2x2 inch large boards. These boards will be used to frame the larger area of your 1x2 feet birch board. Fix them in place accordingly.

Now cut dowel rods and insert them horizontally into the sides of the frame you just made.

Decide how much space you want between the dowel rods and mark that spacing on the inner sides (right and left) of the frame. Make sure that the marks on both right and left side of the frame line up exactly, otherwise your dowels will be visibly uneven.

Drill holes into the markings, but do not drill all the way through the wood.

Insert the dowel rods into the drilled holes on both sides of the frame, making sure everything is secure in place.

Attach the other two sides of the frame using nails and line it up on the 2x2 feet board.

Now secure the frame in place on the board with pin hinges.

Prime and paint the rack in a colour of your choice and allow it to dry completely.

Drill holes on top of the boards and attach the sash fastener, a part of lock will be on the frame while other on the birch board. Also attach knobs at the bottom of the birch board.

Attach hinged brackets to the sides of the drying rack to keep it from hanging.

Add D rings to the back of the clotheshorse and you are finished. Hang certain articles of clothing on it and save them from being ruined by the dryer.
