Differences Between Squash and Racquetball

Squash and racquetball are two famous ball games. Both of them are played indoors in a closed room. Both games involve hitting the ball with a racket between two players. A score is made when one of the players misses to hit the ball shot or served by the opponent. Both sports are physically intense and need great endurance. At the same time, both are fun and thrilling and put up a  good show for both players and fans.  They may seem similar with the nature of the game and the basic rules, but there are a lot of differences in the equipment, court and advanced rules. For a sport enthusiast, it is important to know these differences.

    Courts:

The standard racquetball court measures 20 feet wide, 40 feet long, and 20 feet high. Squash courts have shorter but wider than racquetball ones. Their dimensions are 32 feet long, 21 feet wide, and 15 feet (at the highest point). In racquetball, you can hit anywhere including the ceiling while in squash you have designated lines drawn around the highest point. Above this strip, the area is out of bound. So a racquetball court has more playable zones.

    Equipment:

Squash rackets are narrower and longer than racquetball ones. The balls used in squash are less bouncy, so the game is fast paced and you have little time to get to it and respond.

    Winning rules:

In squash, you need to win 11 points to win a game. You win the match when you win three games. However, in racquetball you need to win 15 points to win a game and two games to win a  match. If there is a tie, you have to score 11 points in the third match to win.

In squash, you can win a point on your own and also on your opponent’s serve. In racquetball, the rule is a bit strict. You can only win a point on your own serve like in the game of tennis.
