Advertising and promotion marketing are mostly used synonymously. However, there is quite a difference between the two concepts. Promotion is one of the 4ps of marketing and encompasses the activities of advertising, public relations and sale promotions. On the other hand, advertising is just aimed at increasing the sales by displaying different kinds of ads on media. Therefore, we can say that promotion is a much broader concept than advertising.

For advertisement, you have to pay a certain amount of money whereas in promotion, you can promote your products and services even free of cost through public relations.

    Advertising

    It is a form of mass communication in which you have to pay a certain amount of money. Your ads are displayed on electronic and print media. The most common media used for advertising include television, radio, newspaper, magazines, billboards and websites. You have to make specific ads for the media which you have chosen for the advertisement of your products of services. For instance, if you are looking forward to advertise on any website, you should create an ad which contains all the necessary information regarding the product or service in an image of a particular size and shape. On the other hand, if you want to advertise on television, you will be charged according to the time. Therefore, you have to create an ad for which you can pay easily.

    It will be important to mention that in the past few years, internet has become the most popular platform for advertisement as the consumers spend more time on the internet as compared to television.

    Promotion

    It is one of the 4Ps of marketing. It is quiet a broad concept and includes advertising, public relations and sales promotion. In advertisement, you have to create and display different kinds of ads related to your products and services on the media of your choice. Furthermore, public relation which is commonly known as PR is a type of mass communication in which you don’t have to pay any kind of money for creating good relationships with your audience. In sales promotion include the steps which you take to improve your sales e.g. discount offerings, coupons and lucky draws. Besides, you give some particular benefits to your vendors so that he may sell more and more of your products to his customers.
