Difference Between Tone and Pulse Dialing

In order to signify the telephone number that a person wishes to call, there are two ways for a telephone user to communicate with the central telephone relay, tone dialing and pulse dialing. Tone dialing differs from its counterpart in a number of ways. It signifies the numbered entered by the user by using specific tones, while pulse dialing indicates the number through a series of signal pulses. Tone dialing-based phones come with numeric keypads, whereas majority of the phones using pulse dialing come with a rotary dial instead. Tone dialing works faster as compared to pulse dialing and is far more prevalent in the modern era as compared to the latter.

    Tone Dialing

Tone dialing, also known as Dual Tone Multi Frequency, is one of the two methods by which the phone communicates with the central telephone relay to specify the phone number that the caller is wishing to connect with. It indicates the different numbers pressed by the caller by using different tones. One notable feature of tone dialing is that it sends only one signal for each digit that is pressed instead of sending multiple signals. In order to make the dialing process extremely convenient for the phone users, tone dialing phones come with numeric keypads on them. Having digits on the phone make it really simple and easy to dial a phone number quickly without facing or causing any problem.  The dialing process becomes so easy that even children have no problem in picking up the tone dialing phone and dialing the number of their parents, favourite relative or friends when they feel like it. The ease of use and simplicity involved in tone dialing has made the telephone companies across the globe set it as a standard.

    Pulse Dialing

Pulse dialing is a traditional way of communication with the central telephone transmit in order to specify the telephone number that the caller intends to connect with. The digit of the phone number that the caller wishes to call is indicated through a series of clicks that correspond with that specific digit. Identifying one digit from the next takes up a bit of time, making pulse dialing a long time. The mechanism used to dial the phone number in pulse dialing is based on rotating the dial, which once again is a lengthy process, as the caller has to wait for the dial to return to its original position before rotating it again for the next digit. The inconvenience and issues associated with pulse dialing has resulted in it becoming an out-dated system of phone dialing, with very few companies left that still use or support it.
