How to Grow a Willow Tree

One superb way to jack up the natural beauty of your yard or garden is by growing a Willow tree. This plant is fairly simple to grow. Properly stick the cuttings in the ground and watch them grow. You can plant the willow cuttings anytime of the year in the specially designed planting pots, or outdoor in late winter to early fall.

There are various varieties of willow trees that look like weeds. Their branches consist of shiny and silvery leaves, making them an eye-catching specimen plants. The roots of willow trees are known for their size, toughness, stubbornness to life and speedy growth. You can cut these plants almost anywhere and they will grow right back.

    Acquire Willow Plant Cuttings

    If there is a willow plant within your area, cut off its healthy branch – about 1-inch thick and 10 to 16 inches long. Now slash it into medium cuttings, using sharp pruning shears. Otherwise, purchase some ready-to-use cuttings for your nearest plant nursery.

    Store the Willow Plant Cuttings

    Place the willow plant cuttings in a vase or jar and pour in some tap water until spring. Now set the vase/ jar in your refrigerator or plant them in a big planting pot with a well balanced potting soil.

    Choose a Site to Plant the Cuttings

    Select a location with moist soil, receiving proper sunlight. Make sure not to choose an area with septic systems, patio, foundations, drainage system or concrete around, as the Willow plants are known for the fast growing invasive roots.

    Prepare the Soil

    Use a trowel or shovel to plow the soil of the selected area, turning over to a depth or 10 to 12 inches. Add some compost into the plowed soil and mix it well, using rakes or spades.

    Make Holes

    Make use of a trowel and make holes in the plowed up soil, keeping suitable distance in-between.

    Plant the Willow Plant Cuttings

    Place the willow plant cuttings in the holes upright (vertically) at a depth of 16 to 18 inches. Pat-down some soil around the cutting in the holes and fix them properly.
