How to Make Bread Dough Christmas Ornaments
Instead of investing in expensive ornaments for your family Christmas tree, channel your inner creativity during the holiday season and give your tree a personal touch by creating bread dough ornaments at home. In addition to saving you money, this can be a great way to personalise your Christmas tree, and tailor the ornaments to suit your preferences, and any particular theme you might want to adhere to.
Things Required:
– 2 cups all purpose flour
– 1 cup water
– 1 cup salt
– Gold or silver wire
– Acrylic paints
– Polyurethane varnish
– Sponge brush
– Small paint brush

To begin, create a simple dough to form the base of your ornaments. Take a large mixing bowl, and add in the flour, water, and salt. Stir them with a wooden spoon until they are thoroughly blended, and the mixture becomes dough-like in consistency.

Then, scoop the dough out of the bowl, put it on a flat and lightly floured surface. Knead it with your hands a couple of times, to make sure it is worked through properly, and then allow it to rest for around 5 to 10 minutes.

Next, pluck out small pieces of dough with your hands, and shape them into ornaments – you can also use cookie cutters for this purpose, or simply form them with your hands. You can do anything from simple shapes like stars, to more elaborate ornaments, like turtle-doves.

Once the ornaments have been formed, create hoops with the gold or silver wire – simply slide the wire through the top of the ornament, bend it into a circle, and twist the top, so it forms a secure hoop. Then, line all the ornaments up on a baking sheet.

Preheat your oven to 300 degrees, then slide the tray containing the ornaments in, and let them bake for around 30 minutes. After this time period has elapsed, bring the heat down to 200, and bake them for another 30 minutes, or however long it takes until they are completely solid.

Take the ornaments out of the oven, and allow them to cool on a wire rack. Then, use a sponge brush to apply a thin, even coat of polyurethane varnish on each ornament, and let them all dry completely. Finally, use acrylic paints to decorate the ornaments as per your wishes, and let them dry before you hang them up.
