How to Play the Organ

Organ is an instrument which is most commonly used in religious gatherings especially in churches. It is a time-honoured instrument and is incorporated in other musical art forms including rock, blues and jazz. They are similar to piano in some ways but have major differences as well. Remember that organ is a fun musical instrument to play and is easy to learn. You can start by learning basic notes and after few weeks, add foot pedals. You are required to have some practice in order to play organ smoothly and easily.

    Get beginner’s book

    First you need to get beginner’s book and learn the basics. By this you will be able to learn the notes and how to read music. Watch out for black keys which come in groups of two and three. After finding group of two black keys you need to place the finger on the left. Slide it down towards the left on the white key. Remember that this is the ‘C’ key.

    Labelling

    Now you need to label the keys initiating with ‘C’ from left to right. You are required to label from A to G and then continue repeating it. Later you should practice playing and get used to the sound. Remember that an organ is different from piano as it does not have sustaining pedals.

    Get organ shoes

    You need to buy organ shoes for the pedals. By wearing these shoes, your feet won’t slip when you are in action. You need to practice moving your feet on the pedals. Remember to place your heels on the white notes and toes on the black ones.

    Practice playing with your hands and feet

    Next you need to practice playing with both hands and feet at the same time. It is not required that you play proper music. You can simply get the feeling of playing with feet and hands together by making your own sounds.

    Play the music

    Now you need to start playing the music. Learn some notes for your hands. Later learn the notes for feet. In the end you need to play the music with both hands and feet.

    Have fun while playing

    You can play your music with different sounds. Remember to change the sounds quickly after playing one.
