Start off by learning the basic chord. You need to learn the finger positioning for that particular chord so that you can start off by holding it down. New learners should always start off by playing a major chord on an open string. For example, if you are planning to play a D chord, you will have to play the third string of the bass guitar, or the eleventh fret of the fourth string – which is also the last string on your four-stringed bass guitar.

Mostly people use their index and middle finger but you should do what suits you best. These two fingers can create a good doodle if you use them, but comfort comes above everything. Use your index and middle finger to execute the idea perfectly. However, the picking hand uses these two fingers while the other hand can use all four of the fingers; especially the pinky.
