Difference Between OGG and MP3

There are many audio file types available, which you can use to play music files on different audio players. Different audio players require different audio format, in order to play the music stored in the files. That is the reason why you should familiarise yourself with some of the commonly used audio formats. For that purpose, you can check the extensions of the audio files, which explain their file types.

MP3 and OGG are two of some of the most commonly used lossy compression audio file formats used by people to copy and store music. MP3, first developed by Thompson Multimedia and Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft in the late 80’s, is the one of the popular audio file formats, because of its ability to maintain the quality of the audio, while compressing the size of the original file by around 300 to 500 per cent.

For instance, if you have PCM or WAV format files saved in your computer, which take too much disk space, then you can convert them to Mp3 and you can save a lot of space on your hard disk. The MP3 format was specially devised to upload music files on the internet, so that people can download the files easily and quickly. Usually, one can load around 10 to 20 WAV files on a normal CD. On the other hand, over 100 MP3 audio files can easily be written on a normal CD.

The popularity of the MP3 format led many companies to manufacture MP3 players and now you can find hundreds and thousands of different brands available in the market when it comes to purchasing an MP3 player.

In the meantime, OGG, also known as OGG Vorbis, is also lauded as one of the best compressed audio format. The OGG is an open source format and is available to all for free. It is not as popular as MP3 format is, yet, it has the ability to compress the file more compared to MP3. Therefore, one can save more OGG format files to a CD compared to MP3 files.

When compressing digital audio, OGG relies on changes in the bit rates. Therefore, if a file has a lower bit rate, the file size will be really small, and otherwise. On the other hand, MP3 compresses the audio with a constant bit rate. Therefore, the file size of an MP3 file will be larger, even if you record a particular track with no sound in it.
