The goal is to blend two different images together through an image map. It is not difficult however. All it takes a few clicks. You may find this process a little confusing in the beginning. But with practice, you will start enjoying the process of creating a depth merge image with the GIMP freeware.

First of all, gather a couple of different images and be sure that the size of both images is same. It is very important to have two images making up a sequence. The depth merge image would look awful, if the source pictures are not alike. After selecting the two appropriate images, open the first one.

With the first image already open, you are supposed to open the second image in the program. The size of the both pictures should be same, but they can be scaled differently. The eventual merged image will be slightly darker, so it is important to have fully exposed images.

Now with both images open, you need to select FILTERS/COMBINE/ DEPTH MERGE in order to open the control panel.

In case you find only one image showing in the control panel, there is something wrong with the size of the images. If both images are aligned with their respective image maps, you are good to go.

The two images will appear just like layers on the image map. You need to adjust their position over each other. This process is totally different from joining two images to create a panorama. The size of the ultimate depth merge image and the source images will be same.

Once the desired background and scale have been ensured, you can experiment  with the overlapping of the images to get the effect of your choice.

  • 5

The final step is about making sure that no double background or double person is visible. To eliminate the doubling effect, you need to adjust the images very carefully. If the two images are synchronised, your merge depth image is ready.
