Difference between Coffin and Casket
Most of the people do not know that Coffin and Casket are two different things. People generally confuse the two terms and fail to understand that there is a considerable difference between the two. The purpose of both the coffin and casket is the same and the two are used as burial containers.
Coffins are the older of the two as they are being used since the 16th century. On the other hand, caskets are usually a modernized version of a coffin as there is a difference in the shape and material used.
The main difference between the two is the shape. Coffins resemble the shape of a human being. They are wider from the shoulders and are narrow from the feet. The width of the coffin decreases when going from top to bottom. On the other hand, caskets are rectangular in shape and the width is same from top to bottom.
Another difference in the two is of the price. The coffins are less expensive as they are of a standard shape whereas caskets are expensive as they are customized in shape. Another main difference is that there is a split-lid to view the body. The lid can be closed when everybody has seen the body.

Caskets
Caskets are rectangular in shape and can be customized according to the body shape. They only have four sides and also have a split-lid at the top so that the face of the body can be seen. Caskets are usually very expensive and are lined with silk or velvet.
Caskets also have the option of an air-tight seal which keeps the body preserved for a longer period of time.
