How to Paint a Car Bumper

Bumpers are not only an important part of the car but also can add greatly to the aesthetic value of a vehicle. Generally they come without any colours and then it is up to the manufacturer, or in some cases, the end user to decide on what the colour of the bumper will be.

It is a job that can very well be done by you at home and all it needs is the right tools and the right approach to the job.

Things Required:

– Liquid Soap
– Bumper Cleaner
– 80 Grit Sand Paper
– 400 Grit Sand Paper
– Plastic Filler
– Paint
– Spray Paint Machine

Instructions

  • 1

    Take Wrap Off

The bumpers have a plastic wrap around them in order to protect them from the environment. Remove it to move forward with the task to paint it. In case the bumper is not brand new, you can skip to the next step.

  • 2

    Remove Dirt

First wash the bumper with soapy water. Make sure that there is no residue of the soapy water left and it is thoroughly dried. Next up, remove any remaining dirt on the bumper with the help of bumper cleaner. This should get rid of any impurities that can affect the paint job.

  • 3

    Sand the Bumper

Next up, sand the bumper with an 80 grit sand paper. This will allow the surface of the bumper to be slightly rough and help it in being able to deal with plastic filler and paint.

  • 4

    Apply Plastic Filler

This will depend on the nature of the raw material that is used on the bumper. There are different kinds of materials including the PP or Polypropylene, PPO or Polyphenylene oxide, PUR or Polyurethane plastic rigid, TPUR or the thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer or TPE is thermoplastic elastomer. Buy a filler as per the kind of the material that is used in the bumper and give it two coats. Give it enough time to dry.

    Apply Paint

Once you’re ready to paint, use a 400 grid sand paper to sand off some of the primer that you have applied. Use a high volume, low pressure spraying machine for the job. It is best to rent one from a hardware store.

After spraying the base coat, let it dry and give the second coat with a hardener. Make sure that you mix the paint and the hardener in the right ratios to get the best results.
