How to Prevent Condensation on Basement Walls

Any leakage in the walls can cause a lot of condensation in the basement which can make it ill-smelling and untidy. In order to prevent condensation on the basement walls, you will have to follow a specific procedure. Moreover, you will require some special materials, tools and equipments to stop the leakage so as to get rid of the condensation and to make your basement clean from any kind of dampness and mess.

– Aluminium foil
– Duct tape
– Dehumidifier or room air conditioner
– Foam pipe insulation

    First of all, you have to find the leakage point in the walls of the basement from where the condensation is coming from. It is quite easy as you can simple check for the moisture on the walls. Then, you have to dry off the moisture and attach the aluminium paper on the wall with the help of duck tape.

    Keep the foil on the wall for at least 24 hours. Then, remove the foil from the wall and check whether it is dry or not. If it is still damp, apply the foil on the wall again for a little more time.

    If you have any furniture or fixture in the basement which has become damp due to condensation, you will have to remove it from that place. If you cannot remove anything, you should try to dry it off with the help of a dryer.

    Open the windows of the basement so that the fresh air may flow into it. The air circulation will help to create a good impact in the humidity and dampness.

    It is very important for you to assess the level of humidity in the basement. During the summer season, it is usually below 65 percent. To get rid of humidity, you will have to use a dehumidifier or an air conditioner. You must know that the dehumidifier is less expensive as compared to a portable air conditioner. Therefore, if you cannot afford a portable air conditioner, you can simply use a dehumidifier.

    After that, you have to insulate all your cold water pipes with the help of foam insulation tubes which can be bought from any hardware store. You must cover the pipes properly before using them for insulation.
