There is no doubt in that directing a high school musical can be a great fun but it can also be frustrating if you don’t know how to manage people. Your ignorance can double the trouble for you and ultimately the project will just be a waste of time.
However, it does not mean that you should give up; rather you can make best out of your efforts by planning and executing this project in a proper manner. First of all you should do research about the project. Read the script and make up your mind as to how you want to stage this project. If you are directing for the first time, then it is better to check the approach of experienced directors. Watch other projects and try to learn from everyone. This exercise will definitely equip you with required skills.

After getting a clear idea about the story, now it’s time to break down the script and make a schedule for everything. This is to facilitate the production department as they will be able to prepare everything for you according to the schedule.

Next thing you will do is to conduct auditions. You will have to select from the available choices; pick the best and assign them different characters. Make sure you define and assign appropriate characters otherwise your project will be ruined.

After finalising the cast and crew, you will make schedule for rehearsals. Normally, a theatre play demands four to six weeks of rehearsals but you can adjust the duration according to your desire and need.

Provide your actors the copies of script and instruct them to memorise their portions. You must not go hard on them rather be polite in the beginning as the amateurs take time to get settled. However, do not show too much leniency because professionalism is equally important.

Formulate an evaluation report of every actor and hand over to them after every rehearsal. Point out their strengths and flaws and give some suggestions for improvement. You will see a significant difference in couple of weeks.

Spare the last week before opening night for full dress rehearsals. This will help them a lot to get comfortable with their costumes and develop a mannerism. Moreover, you will be able to fix things before the project goes on stage.
