Before doing anything else you will need to make sure that you have the latest copy of Adobe Photoshop installed on to your computer. If there is no Photoshop installed on the hard drive, consider navigating to the official website. Find the product and services page and then download the product for a small amount or fee.

Run the application to complete the installation process. Locate the Photoshop icon in the Startup menu. Click the file menu and find Open. Click the Open menu to find the photo with the matte in your computer. Double click the file in the browsing window to open the photo in Adobe Photoshop workspace.

Now consider locating the window in the main menu tool bar at the top of the workspace window and select the Layers option to run the palette. You will be required to right click the theme layer and choose the Duplicate layer option. Click Save changes to add the theme copy layer. Choose the Delete layer after right clicking the real theme layer. Click the Yes button as a new warning window pops up. Find the Layer menu at the top of the main screen and then choose the Matting option. Next, choose the Remove White Matte or Remove Black Matte to clear the scanned art work image. You may also choose to perform both operations depending on your needs.

Select the Save As option once you are done editing the scanned artwork in Adobe Photoshop. This can be done by clicking the File menu and selecting Save As option. Choose a new name for the matted artwork if you would like to save the original file as well. Close the Photoshop application and then find the artwork file on your computer.
