Difference between Kimbap and Sushi

Kimbap and Sushi are two dishes which look visually very similar to each other. However, there are a lot of differences between the two.

The country where these dishes originated is the first differentiating factor between the two. Kimbap originated in Korea whereas Sushi originated in Japan. Moreover, Kimbap and Sushi are different from each other in terms of worldwide popularity. Sushi is a lot more popular as compared to Kimbap. As a matter of fact, Sushi is so popular all over the world that a person eating Kimbap for the first time may think of it as just another form of Sushi. The difference in popularity can be directly attributed to the time duration for which these dishes have been around. Kimbap evolved between 1910 and 1945, the time during which Korea was ruled by Japan. On the other hand, Sushi is an ancient dish which has been around in one form or the other since the 13th century.

Apart from the country of origin and world wide popularity, another difference is the ingredients used. Raw fish is one of the basic ingredients used in making Sushi. However, the same is not true in case of Kimbap. Furthermore, vinegar rice is used along with other ingredients to make Sushi. On the other hand, seaweed rice is used in tandem with other ingredients to make Kimbap. Last, but not the least, large quantities of vinegar are used when making Sushi whereas sesame oil is used when making Kimbap.

    Kimbap:

    Kimbap, formally named Gimbap, is a Korean dish. The main ingredients of Kimbap are rice and seaweed (gim). Other lessere ingredients include fish, eggs, and even vegetables. Rice, seasoned with salt and oil, is used to make this delicious Korean dish. There is a slight variation in different types of Kimbap. For instance, some people make use of vegetables as an ingredient while making Kimbap whereas others do not.

    Sushi:

    Sushi is a Japanese dish, extremely popular throughout the world. The three main ingredients of Sushi are rice, vinegar and seafood. The literal meaning of the word Sushi is ‘Sour’. Sushi got its name from the fact that while making this dish, seafood (fish) was fermented in rice that tasted sour.
