Difference between Genetic Variation and Genetic Diversity

Genetic variation and Genetic diversity are two different terms that are often used in the advanced field of genetics. The variation of alleles of genes is called genetic variation while differences contained by a species in the form of the genetic makeup are called genetic diversity. The foundation for organisms through species is also studied to identify biodiversity of different genes. Environmental conditions are also produced to bring collective diversity in genes. Genetic variation and genetic diversity also exhibit the existence of variation. With the advancement of studies, new research has shown that both processes also help the species to thrive through increased adaptability.

    Genetic variation

    The variation of alleles of genes is called genetic variation. These variations happen through the gene pool of a species or population. The process of genetic variation is very complex as it takes place within a particular population. In natural selection of species, genetic variation provides raw material. Sexual reproduction and mutation are two main causes which come under genetic variation. When you see a process of alteration of an allele, you need to understand that it happens due to mutation. Once it happens, the next generation of allele will be comprised of varied genes in their population. The varied gene can be an allele or a chromosome. In genetic variation, the meiosis process is also very important as it gives preference in built up gamete production.

    Genetic diversity

    The variation contained by a particular species in the form of genetic makeup is called genetic diversity. In genetic diversity, two very important things need to be understood. First is the overall genetic material while the second one identifies whether it is related with one or more species. Basically it is the genetic diversity that encourages species to adapt to different challenging environments. It is already understood that our environment is changing at a rapid pace, the process of adaptability is highly valuable in the eyes of different researchers. Recently a survey showed that the changing environment has endangered many species. Only due to genetic diversity, many are still fighting to be on this planet. In many animals, lack of genetic diversity is giving them a tough time to exist. These animals include cheetahs and polar bears.
