A Children’s Night Time Story – Once Upon a Banana
One day the banana decided to find someone else to hang with, so it climbed out of its tree and went walking. Very quickly, it came to another tree and looked up. Hanging high in the tree was a round and green fruit.
“Green is good,” he said to itself. “I am green and it is green. Maybe it is a banana.” Then the banana called to the fruit, saying “Hello up there. Are you a banana?”
“No I am not.” The round green fruit said. ” I am a pomegranate. Would you like to join me in my tree?”
The banana thought that would be fun, talking to a pomegranate, but that was not what it was looking for. So it said to the pomegranate, “No, thanks. Perhaps I will come back, but I am going to try another tree.”
“Okay” said the pomegranate. “I hope you find a good tree.”
With the apple’s good wishes, the banana searched for another tree. Soon it came to another tree, and when it looked up, it saw a big brown round fruit hanging from the tree.
“Wow,” said the banana. “I wonder if that is what I will look like when I grow up.” Then the banana called to the fruit, saying “Hello up there. Are you a banana?”
“No I am not,” the big brown round fruit said. ” I am a coconut. Would you like to join me in my tree?”
The banana thought that would be fun, talking to a coconut, but that was not what it was looking for. So it said to the coconut, “No, thanks. Perhaps I will come back, but I am going to try another tree.”
“Okay” said the coconut. “I hope you find a good tree.”
With the coconut’s good wishes, the banana searched for another tree. Soon it came to another tree, and when it looked up, it saw a prickly brown and yellow fruit hanging from the tree.
“Wow,” said the banana. “I don’t think that is a banana, but I will find out.” The banana called to the fruit, saying “Hello up there. Are you a banana?”
The prickly brown and yellow fruit waited a little, then spoke to the banana in a rough voice. “I am certainly not a banana, as you can most plainly see. I am a pineapple. However, young banana, you should not be by yourself. I think I have seen a bunch of bananas in the next tree over there. When you see them, tell them I sent you. Bananas don’t just hang around with anyone, you know. Now, move along.”
The banana was not sure what to say to the pineapple, but it said “Thanks,” and moved on to the next tree.
Soon it came to the next tree over, and when it looked up, it saw some long green fruit hanging from the tree in bunches. Now that fruit, thought the banana, looked like they knew how to hang together in a tree.
“These must be bananas,” said the banana. “I am long and green, and they are long and green.” The banana called to the fruit, saying, “Hello up there. Are you bananas?”
“Who wants to know?” asked the bunch. “We don’t hang around with just anyone, you know.”
“I was sent here by the pineapple,” said the banana. “He was not very nice to me, but he said he thought you were bananas.”
“The pineapple is pretty rough on the outside,” replied the bunch, “but we think he must be pretty sweet on the inside. He is always doing good things. If he sent you, come on up and hang out with us. We are bananas and bananas don’t just hang out with anyone, you know.”
So the banana was very happy to climb the tree and hang out with the bunch of bananas. It stayed with that bunch until they were all a ripe old age.
