A Day in Lawton, Oklahoma

Lawton, Oklahoma is not typically a place people put on their top ten cities to visit. Most people assume that there is nothing but farms and flat, bare land here. Those people, fortunately, are partly wrong. If you are looking for a quiet vacation, with a small taste of the country life mixed with a touch of city life, then this is a town you should visit.

What is a town without great places to eat? Lawton offers many choices in cuisine. Restaraunts here range from Chinese, Korean, Mexican, and German, to barbeque, steakhouses, and burger joints. Some of the best places you will discover to eat here are little mom and pop, locally owned restraunts. If you are looking to grab a burger for lunch then the place I would recommend is Waynes Drive Inn. Waynes is a locally owned, old fashioned drive inn. They offer everything from burgers and cheese fries to pizza and salad. My signature order would be a sissy cheeseburger (sissy meaning mayo instead of mustard), cheese fries, and a cherry vanilla Dr. Pepper.

After lunch you may want a relaxing walk to burn off some of those calories. Elmer Thomas Prarie Dog park offers a perfect place for a weekend stroll. The park houses many families of prarie dogs, which have burrowed holes all through out the park. The park offers 2 different tracks to walk or ride along. One is a dirt and gravel track which takes to many different exercise stations throughout the park. The other is a street like path with a striped line down the middle to make traffic flow much easier. On one side of the park a pond full of fish and ducks can be found. Although swimming is not aloud in this pond, you are invited to fish or feed the ducks. As you continue through the park you will encounter many prarie dogs. These creature scurry from hole to hole to keep out of human reach. Occassionally you will encounter a brave prarie dog which will adventure over to you, but it is advised that you take extreme caution when dealing with them because they are not a domestic animal and can bite.

Next, for an afternoon of shopping we do have a small mall. Central Mall is located down town. Our mall houses many big name stores such as Dillards, J.C.Penny’s, Old Navy, Footlocker, Radio Shack, and Gap. The mall also features a multi-screen theatre which shows all the newly released movies. Our mall has many unique features although some of which are seasonal. One of which is during the christmas season we offer pictures with Santa Claus, and rides on the santa express train.

Lastly, if you are visiting during the holidays, a beautiful end to your day would be a nice carriage ride around the boulevard. Our town offers a “Boulevard of Lights” during the holidays. Gore boulevard is decorated with many christmas figures and lights. In the middle of the boulevard stands a huge, lighted Christmas tree. Not far from the tree a skating rink lies within the shadows. Horse and carriage rides are available for a tour up and down the boulevard. If you find your self here our of season a wide variety of city attractions are available. You should consider visiting one of our small, locally owned shops. There are many specialty shops, antique shops, casinos, clubs and bowling alleys to enjoy.
