A Dream Come True for Local Wrestler, Sabastan Stardust
Sabastan has been a wrestling fan for as long as he can remember. He grew up watching wrestling with his uncle and began training at age 17, even though many people told him he was too small.
“Training for wrestling was one of the toughest things I have ever been through in my life,” says Sabastan. ” When I started training, I trained in this old warehouse with the ring set up on the second floor. Parts of the floors were made out of wood bricks and there were spots where there wasn’t a floor at all. We’d have to go all over that building in the dark. In the wintertime, it was colder inside than it was outside, and in the summer it was hotter inside than outside. I got the snap beat out of me every time I was training.”
Sabastan trained emotionally, physically, and mentally at least six hours a day, three times a week. He says that wrestlers sacrifice a lot including family, relationships, and jobs to follow their labor of love, and there were some days he would arrive at training at two and the afternoon and continue until three in the morning. He trained for a year and a half before he felt ready to go out on his own, even though his trainers and other wrestlers thought he was ready six months into his training.
He participates mostly in Indiana and Kentucky wrestling, although he also travels to Tennessee, Alabama, Illinois and Michigan periodically. Most of the wrestling promotions are in small towns such as Evansville, Indiana or Bowling Green, Kentucky.
Sabastan says that his favorite thing about wrestling is the thrill it gives him and being in the ring doing what he loves. He also says that it’s great to hear people cheering him on, because that’s something you can’t get from regular every day life. He loves having fans and thinks it’s great to have admirers. Another perk is getting to wrestle with people he grew up watching. According to Sabastan, this is a huge honor to him, especially when the wrestlers tell him they like what he does. Still, his favorite people to wrestle with are his pals Chris Pain, Josiah Caine, and Troy Daniels.
“We’ve all known each other so long that we know how to put on good matches with each other,” says Sabastan.
When he’s not busy wrestling, he enjoys art of all types. He writes poetry and loves to read others’ poetry. Although he does a bit of his own visual art, he says he’d rather look at and admire artwork from others. Any time he gets the chance, he makes his way to a dance floor at a local nightclub (preferably an alternative or goth themed club).
Although he admits that all wrestlers would love to make it into the bright lights, he’s happy doing what he enjoys and traveling the MidWes t and participating in Kentucky wrestling. He does want to join a tour to wrestle in Japan in the next couple years.
