What is unusual about Waverly is that even thought it is small, it is rich in banks. It has seven branch bank offices, nine if you count the fact that one of the banks, First National, has three locations.

Hearing this one would think that Waverly is a rich town. But that isn’t true. In actualities it is mostly made up of middle class working people.

The town’s major source of income comes from two small factories: Mills Pride and The Brown Corporation and one department store: Super Wal-Mart. Mills Pride is the biggest employer and they have been hit with financial woes in the past years and have laid off hundreds of employees. Yet, the banks still flourish.

They also have credit cards and loan services. Yet, when viewed close enough one can still see a stand out positive and negative aspect of each bank.

They cater to the Enrichment Plant Employees in Portsmouth, Ohio, as well as the local businesses and people of Waverly, Ohio. Although it has credit union in its name, it is still considered a bank, meeting all the needs. It’s most positive aspects are that their customers have speedy service and they are known for offering special rates on their certificate of deposits. The most negative aspect is that their savings accounts do not offer the usual book type for one to record their transactions. The transactions are recorded on separate receipt type papers.

US Bank is located at 197 East Emmitt Avenue Their phone number is 740-947-2183. It has had many name changes in the past. Two being Bank One and First Star. The most positive aspects of this bank is the pretty building, cleanliness and their ample parking area. The negative is the fact that since it has changed ownership in the past, customers never know when it will happen, again, disrupting their accounts.

Fifth Third Bank is located at 303East Emmitt Avenue Their phone number is 947-1102. The most positive aspect of this bank is the fact that it is part of such a large chain. The most negative is that it has very little parking for their customers who prefer face to face communication to drive up service.

First National Bank is located at 107 North Market Street. Their phone number is 740-947-2136. It is the oldest bank is town. That fact alone is their most positive aspect. Being around for years, gives their customers confidence. It also has two branch offices in Waverly, one located inside Kroger’s Grocery Store and one in The Bristol Village Retirement Village. This gives their customers added convenience. Their most negative aspect is that their main office is not located along Emmitt Avenue, the main street of Waverly, that runs along the center of town.

Ohio Valley Bank is located at 507 West Emmitt Avenue. Its phone number is 740-947-7718. It’s most positive aspect is that their employees gets to know their customers by name and face. Most of the employees have worked at this bank for years. Its most negative aspect is that before two o’clock in the afternoon, they change the date on their transactions to the following business day, which means on Fridays after two o’clock they would be recording the following Monday’s date. This can cause customers to be late on their loan payments, when they really aren’t.

State Farm Bank is located at 104 West Emmitt Avenue. Its phone number is 740-947-7767. It is also an insurance company catering to home loans. This is their biggest negative aspect because most people do not realize that they offer banking services. Their biggest positive is that customers can provide shopping for home loans and home insurance in one stop.

It is centered between both Mills Pride and Super Wal-Mart. This makes it incredibly convenient for the customers who work at either business. Its most negative aspect is that it is the newest of all the banks. It has only been in operation for a couple of years.

All of the banks have loyal customers. The customers chose their bank for different reasons. But location and whether one is acquainted with any of the bank employees seem to be two of the most significant reasons one chooses a bank. As long as the banks provide the services and the needs Waverly wants, they all will continue to flourish. Another thing they have going in their favor is that people of small towns, usually like the idea of keeping their money within that small town. Waverly, it seems is no exception to this principal.
