A Guide to New York City Art Museums
The Metropolitan Museum of Art
The Metropolitan Museum of Art is situated on Fifth Avenue and it is open between 9:30am until 5:30pm most days, with Friday and Saturday being an exception and closing at 9:00pm. The museum, often referred to as The Met, offers various guided tours, lectures and gallery talks in several languages, and many are free after the admission price. There are suggested admission prices, but you are allowed to decide on the amount that you wish to contribute in order to gain admission. There are three floors altogether including the ground floor, the first floor and the second floor. There are a large variety of exhibits split onto the three levels:
�The Ground Floor
The ground floor offers The Robert Lehman Collection, the Uris Auditorium, the Costume Institute and the Ruth and Harold D. Uris Center for Education. The cafeteria can also be found on this level.
�The First Floor
The first floor contains a large variety of fine artwork including medieval works, Greek and Roman art, modern art and arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas. Along with these collections, there is Egyptian art, Arms and Armor, The American Wing, the continuation of the Robert Lehman Collection and European sculpture.
�The Second Floor
If you thought the first floor had a lot to offer, the second floor is even more inundated with different types of artwork. Located here are Islamic art, Japanese art, more modern pieces and Cypriot art. There is also ancient Near Eastern art, arts of Korea, European sculpture and decorative arts, nineteenth-century European paintings and sculpture, as well as many others.
Overall this art museum is one of the best in New York and it offers renowned artworks in various mediums. It also provides child amenities such as strollers and back carriers. You can take pictures within the museum’s galleries for your own personal use, but the use of flash is prohibited. You can also sketch the assorted art and sculptures located in the different wings, but you may not use a fountain pen, watercolor or any ink. There is a gift shop available for you to purchase books and other merchandise and there are good facilities for disabled and impaired visitors.
The Museum of Modern Art
The Museum of Modern Art or MOMA is exclusively focused on modern artwork, so if this is of great interest to you, it is worth visiting this New York City museum. Overall there are 150,000 painting, drawings, posters and historical documents located here. The art displayed is from the late nineteenth century stretching to today’s most recent acquisitions.
The operating hours are currently 10:30am until 5:30pm most days, the exception being Friday when it closes at 8:00pm. There are a number of different dining options available and there are also audio programs which are free along with a one hour guided tour.
For disabled visitors, there are wheelchairs available which can be found in the main lobby. There are disabled toilet facilities and there are elevators set throughout the museum. Adult tickets cost $20 and Senior citizen tickets cost $16. Children get in for free and students can get in for $12.
The Guggenheim Museum
The Guggenheim Museum is one of the most famous museums in the world. There are six main exhibitions including:

The Zaha Hadid exhibit is the largest collection within the Museum with the permanent collection taking up the second biggest area of the museum. Adult tickets are $16 and students and senior citizen tickets are usually $15. Children under the age of 12 get in for free. The museum hours are usually 10:00am until 5:45pm most days, Fridays being the only exception where it closes at a later time of 7:45pm.
Overall, the art museums in New York have plenty to offer and should definitely not to be missed. They all have disabled access and they all provide hours of entertainment for both art lovers and sightseers.
