A Guide to Waverly City, Ohio
Waverly is a small city in the generally poor Pike County, Ohio. And either it is or isn’t the place to live, depending what your idea is of good living. If you prefer condos, black tie banquets, and opera or theatre every Saturday night, you are out of luck.
While there is the fine dining at the Emmitt House and Lake White Club, there is no high society. There is no opera, professional theatre or symphonies. The only book readings likely to be found is at the child section of the public library, and banquets are not black tie.
If you prefer the slower life however, than this is the place to be. Nighttime entertainment inside the city is very limited. The Movie Gallery, Video Hideout and Waverly Video offers movie and video games rental. No sports teams to support except school sports.
Weiss Recreation offers a small amount of bowling lanes to accompany their bar. Most of the bars in town offer pool tables, video machines and live entertainment like Karioke or live local bands. The Canal Pub is one of the most popular bars, and has in the past had comedians and ladies night.
Churches outnumber bars however, with Catholic, Baptist Presbyterian, Pentecostal, Jehovah Witness, Methodist, Apostolic, and inter-denominational services covering all the Christian bases. There are no religions publicly represented besides Christianity.
Pike Christian Academy is the only private school in Waverly. Waverly City School is the only public school. Both are child focused instead of student focused. This type of relationship helps to raise the next generation of society aware citizens.
Bristol Village is a retirement village, with a focus on activities, health and independent living for their residents. Serenity is the keyword, with people coming from everywhere just to spend retirement in this quiet area.
Physical well being is a consideration for anyone. Pike Community Hospital, Adena Medical Center and the Family Health Center is capable of handling most situations. In the event of a major emergency, life flight will take patients to Columbus, Ohio.
The YMCA not only is the favorite fitness center in Waverly, but it is also a teen center that sponsors dances bi-monthly. Omitting school functions, this is the only regular public entertainment for minors. It does have an inside pool which is possibly the only one in Waverly.
Halloween is the busiest holiday for area children. Adena Medical Center sponsors a Health Fair/ Halloween party inside the Center. The Halloween Bash, sponsored by the Sheriff Department and countless local businesses, is by far the largest Halloween party in all of Pike County. A local church, The Anchor of Hope, sponsors a Christian alternative to the celebration of the Pagan holiday.
There is many services available to low income families from local groups. Bridge Haven fights homelessness, the Food Pantry provides food and at times odd commodities, and the Welfare House provides clothes year round plus new shoes, underwear and socks for children at the beginning of the school year.
The Community Action Committee is a common household phrase since they provide financial help for summer cooling equipement to the elderly and people with breathing problems. In the winter, the C.A.C. is swarming with activity from winter heating assistance to all low income families. The C.A.C. has also worked with area businesses to help with the cost of medicine.
As you can see, Waverly is a quiet town. It is the ideal location to move if you are looking for peace, quiet, caring and non-ending boredom.
