A Guide to Waverly Ohio

Waverly, Ohio is a small town in Southern Ohio. As of the 2000 census there were 4.433 people residing in the city. Because Waverly is a small town everyone knows everyone. Fortunately Waverly is also a safe town. Even though Waverly is small there are things to see and enjoy.

Waverly has several places to eat such as McDonald’s, Arby’s, Wendy’s Burger King and Kentucky Fried Chicken. Waverly also has fine dining.

The Emmitt House Restaurant on US Route 23 in Waverly, Ohio features Fine Dining, Gourmet Food, Steaks, a Full Bar, Bands, Dancing, Entertainment, and Great Steaks! The Canal Pub, named after its close vicinity to the old Erie Canal, provides for a cozy and friendly “Sports Bar” atmosphere for gathering and socializing with your friends. Located on US Route 23, this Southern Ohio Restaurant, situated near Scioto Trails in Waverly, Ohio provides a memorable experience in Fine Dining for Banquets, Parties and Celebrations! The building itself began as a hotel in 1861, constructed by Waverly’s most prominent entrepreneur, James Emmitt. Since his death in 1893, the Emmitt House has changed hands several times. Six different individuals have claimed ownership over a period of 128 years. It’s said that James Emmitt still resides in the Emmit House so during your visit you may even see his ghost.

Bob Evans Down on the farm home cookin’ has always been the fare and the Waverly restaurant is no exception to the rule. Located at the north end of Waverly coming into town on US Rt 23, the restaurant is open 7 days a week where their famous breakfasts are served all day.

And last but certainly not least is The Lake White Club is one of the areas oldest, with timbers dating back to the original log cabin built on the site in the mid-1820’s. The cabin officially became the Lake White Club in 1938, serving fried chicken to visitors of the newly formed lake. The restaurant, and its chicken, quickly became so popular that a huge screened-in front porch had to be added to the log cabin dining room. A few years ago, the log cabin was converted into an entrance foyer and lounge. Now the porch is enclosed and they offer a legacy of fine food dating back to over a half-century flavored with a dash of Ohio’s history. Located at 1166 St. Rt. 552 Waverly, Ohio.

Waverly also has places to take the family and spend the day together. There are two parks in the city Waverly City Park. Which is the bigger of the two parks, It has several slides, swings and teeter totters for the kids. There is a shelter with picnic tables and several shaded picnic tables through out the park. They also have charcoal grills for your grilling needs. Bathrooms and water fountains are also in the park.

There is also Canal Park its not as big nor does it have as much for the kiddies to play on but is a beautiful park and since its not as big its usually less crowded. Cardo’s Pizza is right next to it so it makes it very convenient to play at the park and enjoy a delicious hot pizza.

Waverly also has a YMCA with Olympic size indoor heated pool weight room and much more.

For all you fisherman out there Lake White State Park is just a few minutes drive out of Waverly. Picturesque Lake White is nestled between the ridges of southern Ohio’s rugged hills. Water sports enthusiasts can enjoy swimming, boating, water skiing and fishing at this scenic park. A small campground has ten, non-electric sites. Pit latrines and water are available. Campers with pets are permitted on designated sites. Lake White provides excitement for anglers, offering nice catches of bluegill, largemouth bass, crappie, saugeye and catfish. The current state record for Kentucky Spotted Bass was caught at Lake White in 1978. A valid Ohio fishing license is required. The 337-acre Lake White offers unlimited horsepower boating. A launch ramp provides access to the lake. Located in the Appalachian foothills near the Scioto River, Lake White State Park supports a variety of natural wonders. The forested hills are similar in character to the southern Appalachians with magnificent stands of oak, hickory, tulip, ash, maple and scores of other hardwood species. In spring, the forest trails are lined with flowering dogwood and redbud trees and numerous woodland wildflowers. The sandstone outcroppings are coated with various ferns, mosses, lichens and fungi including the prized morel mushrooms in spring.

The dense forest and remoteness of the area create excellent habitat for some of Ohio’s most elusive wildlife. White-tailed deer, ruffed grouse and the secretive wild turkey are abundant in this region. Red fox, skunk, opossum, gray squirrel and raccoons are often sighted. Many reptiles and amphibians find the park’s cool waters desirable. The lake was built during the depression by the Works Progress Administration. Most of the land surrounding the lake is privately owned. Lake White was officially dedicated as a state park in 1949 when the Division of Parks and Recreation was created.

If you enjoy Golf Waverly also has that. Waverly Golf Club located at 973 Golf Course Rd Waverly, OH This is a well-maintained course with a variety of different size greens. The course has four ponds that come into play on six holes. The fairways were built on rolling terrain and heavily wooded on the perimeter. There are some fairway bunkers, and a defined cut of rough borders all the holes.

There is also a Bowling Alley Weiss Recreation located at 725 W Emmitt Ave. They also have a pub adjacent to the Alley if you would enjoy a beer while bowling or something hot to eat. There are also vending machines with snacks and soft drinks. There are eight alleys to bowl.

If you plan to stay awhile or even just over night Waverly has several hotels and motels. Two of the best are Amerihost Inn and Comfort Inn.
