A History and Tour of Wisconsin Dells

Wisconsin Dells is the state’s entertainment and resort hotspot for locals and national travelers alike. Tourists have flocked to the area since its incorporation in 188*, and have been attracted to both the beautiful natural scenery, and the man-made attractions that delight all ages. From waterparks, miniature golf, boat rides on the river, a thrill show, and even a ferris wheel, there is never a dull moment during a family vacation! Adult-only sites include private settings such as spas, luxurious condominiums, and river cruises. The breathtaking scenery amongst the Dells pine trees provides a great getaway for nature lovers, and various state parks are scattered densely throughout the area.

The historical roots are based on Native American ownership and this includes a rich background of myths and legends along the Wisconsin River. The Menominee and Ho-Chunk tribes of the land traveled the rivers and Great Lakes to Europe to trade furs and other goods. Lumber was also a leading industry, and the natural resources were abundant. White pine was cut and prepared ready for trading down the Wisconsin River, and contributed to a large portion of the economy and business in Europe. Dams were built along the river during the Industrialization era, and this quickly bought increased power and electricity. 1838 marked the first settlers taking up residence in the area..

After American settlement in the late 1880s, the French named the area “Dalles” as a reference during their explorations. This quickly became the standard Ã?¯Ã?¿Ã?½Dells’ as we know it today, after French explorers left Wisconsin. Wisconsin Dells itself was originally the City of Kilbourn, named in honor of the Kilbourn Railroad’s president. It changed to Wisconsin Dells in 1931.

Besides the economical contributions, the Dells soon became popular for tourists and vacation seekers. The natural beauty, the open rivers, and rocky terrain all contributed to exceptional views and soon became an attractive tourist destination. In 1946, Mel Flath introduced the Ducks to the Dells; these are still in operation today for travelers to ride and tour the city. These army surplus vehicles can tour both land and water, and are unique to the Dells’ tourist activities.

In addition to large-scale resorts and hotels populating the upper and lower Dells areas, today there is a lot more to experience in the downtown and local districts. Crystal Grand Theatre

The Crystal Grand was built in, and features live performances and concerts from around the country. Seating for over 2,000 guests is available, and the building itself is a replica of an old-style country music theater (see picture). The schedule of performances ranges from The Beach Boys, Mannheim Steamroller, a Nashville Legends Hall of Fame Show, and other noteworthy guests. Enjoy shows from May through December.

The Del-Bar

This classic dinner venue was built in 1943, and the architecture was inspired by renown architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Famous for signature steaks, seafood, and classic drinks, the Del-Bar is a famed favorite.

Marley’s

This Caribbean-themed bar and restaurant features outdoor seating, live music daily, and specials year round. You’ll enjoy a casual and fun atmosphere, with an extensive menu and drink choices.

Mr. Pancake Restaurant

Originally a ferryboat, Mr. Pancake Restaurant serves fresh pancakes, waffles, and breakfast delights in during the peak season. The d�©cor and classic atmosphere provide fun and excitement for a memorable breakfast or lunch.

Tommy Bartlett Exploratory and Thrill Show

The Tommy Bartlett shows and exploratory museum are frequent tourist stops for fun and entertainment. The outdoor show features a ski, boat, and motorcycle show daily, and the exploratory museum provides hours of hands-on entertainment for the science enthusiasts!

Mount Olympus Theme Park

The Mount Olympus Theme Park features rollercoasters, water entertainment, and a variety of games and thrills. You’ll see the trademark Trojan Horse at the front gates, and a Roman-inspired theme park with fun activities!

Dells Ducks

The Dells Ducks provide a beautiful and exciting journey through the upper and lower Dells, both on land and on the river. Join the crowds to enjoy the thrill of riding on this Dells tradition, and take in the Native American myths and legends of the river itself.

Mexicali Rose

This riverside venue features Mexican-American cuisine with dockside dining and outdoor views of the Mark Twain-inspired boats. Enjoy lunch or dinner year round.

Showboat Saloon

Located in the downtown Dells district, the Showboat Saloon features live entertainment and music nightly in an old-style setting. The menu features beer and classic American fare for a fun, casual, night out.

Wizard Quest

This high-tech recent addition to Dells activities is a great computer-based adventure game for the young and old alike! The hands-on simulations provide a few hours of entertainment with a Wizard theme.

Glockenspiel & Essen Haus

The Essen Haus is the Dells’ feature for German tradition and of course, Polka! Enjoy the Glockenspiel daily, as the Pied Piper rings in the hour with a demonstration on the square. The Essen Haus features food, beer, and entertainment year round.
