A Local’s Guide to Santa Barbara
Just ninety miles north of Los Angeles, off the 101 freeway lies the quaint seaside town of Santa Barbara, California. Santa Barbara is special. Nowhere in all California will you find sunrises as beautiful dawning over the Pacific. (Especially during autumn) This coastal town has a somewhat preserved feeling about it. With the Santa Ynez Mountains protecting it from behind and the sea in front of it, the visual splendor of Santa Barbara is second to none.
The Chumash, a Native American group were the first to settle this area thousands of years ago. Spanish Missionaries later came to the area and fueled an already growing population. In the 1780’s The Mission and El Presidio were established in Santa Barbara ushering in a new era of colonization.
The City of Santa Barbara today continues to be deep rooted in tradition. The Fiesta Parade is held annually (August) and celebrates the cities rich Spanish culture. Whether you are looking for a great weekend getaway or packing up the kids for a family vacation, Santa Barbara has a lot to offer. The following are best of Santa Barbara and local favorites.
Restaurants: Try Max’s (3514 State St. Santa Barbara) for breakfast. Max’s attracts an older crowd and has amazing food. They offer an array of exotic coffees and a menu that is sure to please. (I personally recommend the Breakfast Sandwich at Max’s; I can never get enough of this delight).
For a coffee break head over to The Daily Grind on De La Vina St. This place cannot be beat. The Daily Grind has an excellent breakfast burrito with salsa that is to die for, accompany this with a Mocha Blend and you will be in seventh heaven.
After a long day at the beach head over to Alcazar Tapas Bar up on the mesa. (1812 Cliff Drive Santa Barbara) A tall glass of their Sangria is a must have at this local hot spot.
