A New Commonly Abused Drug in the Kansas City Area

Unfortunately, the entire world has a growing drug problem. Now, even younger teenagers have started using illegal drugs, and there’s not much anyone can do to put a stop to it.

Currently a drug called AMT is rapidly growing more popular in the Kansas City area. The high is similar to that of a combination of LSD and Ecstasy (MDMA), but lasts for 8-14 hours. It was very uncommon until the 1990s, until it gained very quick popularity and was illegalized in 2003.

AMT, or amphetamine-tryptamine, was originally developed in the 1960’s as an anti-depressant, but it never succeeded for that purpose. It was sold commercially around the world for research purposes. It quickly became used for recreational abuse.

Along with the anticipated effects, such as increase in energy, euphoria, and a mood lift, AMT often causes anxiety, nausea, paranoia, headaches, and muscle aches. There are several cases of death due to an AMT overdose, particularly oral overdoses larger than 60mg. Often, AMT is confused with Ecstasy, and the mixture of the two can be fatal, or cause serious harm such as seizures, strokes, and mental retardation.

The pills are rare, but, sadly enough, sold for $5-20 on average. This is a growing problem in the Johnson County area, but authorities are making special efforts to prevent the spreading of this horrifying drug.
