ATV Vacation on Route 66 Through Oklahoma
When following Route 66 from Texas through Oklahoma, continue on the frontage road from Shamrock, Texas through Texola, Erick and on to Hext, Oklahoma. In Hext, the frontage road crosses to the northern side of I-40 and continues to US-283. At the intersection of US-283 and the frontage road turn right, get on Business Loop-40, and travel through Sayre. After leaving Sayre, take the northern frontage road toward Elk City. Continue on the frontage road to intersection with N-1950, travel southeast, pass OK-6 and continue to 3rd Street. Stay on 3rd Street to Van Buren Avenue. Turn right on Van Buren Avenue and continue to OK-66. Turn east on OK-66 and follow it to the intersection of OK-34 and get on back on the I-40 frontage road. Stay on the frontage road to Canute, continue through Foss, and continue traveling toward Clinton. Take 10th Street into Clinton and continue on to Gary Boulevard. Turn right on Gary Boulevard and follow to yield sign. Turn left at the yield sign and re-enter I-40 frontage road, travel east into Weatherford. In Weatherford, turn right on Rainey, left on 4th Street, cross the railroad tracks, turn left on Main Street, left onto Washington, right on East Main Street and continue to I-40 North frontage road. Stay on the frontage road through Hydro to Bridgeport. Continue on the frontage road to the intersection with US-281. Take US-281 through Hinton Junction to Geary, and then take US-270E to Calmet. Continue on US-270E to I-40N frontage road and follow the frontage road to El Reno. In El Reno turn right on Sunset Drive and stay on it to Choctaw Avenue. Take a left on Choctaw Avenue, then right turn on Wade Street, back onto OK-66E. Take OK-66E through Yukon through Bethany and onto War Acres. In War Acres, OK-66 becomes 39th Street, stay on 39th Street and travel east into Oklahoma City.
In Oklahoma City, Route 66 turns right onto Western Avenue then turns left onto 23rd Street and left onto Lincoln Boulevard. Travel on Lincoln Boulevard to 50th Street; take a right on 50th Street then a left onto Kelley Avenue, which dead ends at Memorial Road. Take Memorial Road to US-77N. Turn left on US-77N to OK-66E. Travel on OK-66E through Edmond, Arcadia, Luther, Wellston, Chandler, Davenport and into Stroud.
In Stroud, ATV enthusiasts can take their first detour when following Route 66 through Oklahoma. This detour would be the Prague City Lake. This area offers 25 miles of trails for all skill levels of riders on 225 acres with 6 miles shoreline. Cost here is $3 per rider per day. Other activities here include a campground, a playground, restrooms, boating and fishing. To get to Prague City Lake, take US-377S off OK-66E in Stroud. From US-377 travel south to US-62W. After enjoying Prague City Lake, return to Stroud and continue on OK-66E through Milfay, Depew, Bristow, Kellyville and on into Sapulpa. In Sapulpa, the next ATV detour is located at Appalachia Bay ORV Area on Keystone Lake. Here ATV enthusiasts will find two ORV areas, Motorcycle Island and White Water Park, which offer sandy beaches to woods to enjoy as well as camping. To get to Appalachia Bay ORV Area from Sapulpa, follow OK-66E to Tulsa. In Tulsa, get on US-412W and travel past Sand Springs, cross the bridge and exit at Appalachia Bay/ Washington Irving. After spending time at Appalachia Bay, the ATV Enthusiast can travel south to Braggs and spend time at Camp Gruber Recreation Area. These 450 acres are rocky to dirt and open year round. The exploration of Route 66 continues by returning to OK-66E and travel through Catoosa, Verdigris, Claremore, Sequoia, Foyil, Chelsea, Catale, White Oak and Vinita. In Vinita, take US59/69E through Afton, Narcissa, Dotyville and toward Miami. Take Steven Owens Boulevard, turn left on Main Street, take US-69N to Commerce and travel through Quapaw and into Kansas.
