Achieving Your Goals with Wayne Dyer’s Book The Power of Intention

In his recent book, The Power of Intention, Wayne Dyer works on the premise that there is an invisible field (called intention) that lives within and around all things which determines how a thing will grow, develop and interact with the world around it. This field is one with the universal source of creation and it is through this field that we achieve our goals. When we are aligned with intention, our goals manifest smoothly and easily.

According to Dyer, when we think we have failed, we have only lost connection with the field of intention. In order to make a shift in our lives, we have to consciously reconnect to this energy by becoming just like it. Because intention is one with the source, it is creative, kind, loving, beautiful, expansive, abundant, and receptive. Any time we embody these qualities or encourage others to emulate them, we are one with intention.

Through meditating on intention and its seven faces (the qualities listed above) we join the natural flow of the universe. When we will ourselves to do something or we resist change, we are out of sync with universal flow. As we become aware of resistance, we can consciously choose to practice the qualities of intention (beauty, love, creativity, and so on).

Just as Dyer gives us the seven faces of intention, he also gives 7 steps for overcoming the influence of the ego (which tries to take us away from the field of intention through controlling our circumstances). The seven steps are as follows: stop being offended, let go of the need to win, let go of the need to be right, let go of the need to be superior, let go of the need to have more, let go of identifying yourself on the basis of your achievements and let go of your reputation. It is suggested that if we follow these steps, we can release energies of doubt, depression, and low energy.

Additional steps are included in each chapter to help us follow each face of intention. Many chapters also include anecdotes which reveal the profound effect of being kind, loving, receptive, and creative. In one account, Dyer tells of a young boy with disabilities who is allowed to play in a baseball game and through the compassion of several young boys on both teams, he is able to hit a home run and win the game. Each story is touching and conveyed with simplicity, so you never come away feeling that the story is over-done.

Indeed, the entire book is written in a simple, reflective and easy to follow style. Compassion and understanding echo every word so that you do not feel the need to be self critical as you learn the steps included in the book. As each chapter unfolds, you find you truly want to be more beautiful, loving, expansive, kind, receptive, creative, and abundant.

The Power of Intention is an amazing book which touches the heart and inspires without being preachy or syrupy. In its simplicity, it is beautiful because each word feels carefully chosen and yet a 7th grader could easily understand and follow every word. This book is a treasure which you can return to again and again over the years. I thoroughly recommend it!
