All About Blisters

Although I’m generally not a “blister” guy, and haven’t had to deal with many in my 39 years, I have had some – and more than my share of calluses to deal with. However, anyone who’s ever had a blister, knows that it can be very painful experience.

What is a Blister?

A blister is an area of raised skin with a watery liquid inside. Blisters form on hands and feet from both, rubbing and pressure, but unlike calluses, which form over a period of years, blisters form a lot more quickly.

Blisters can form on your feet the same day as wearing uncomfortable or poor-fitting shoes. Blisters can also form on your hands if you forget to wear protective gloves when you’re using a hammer, a shovel, or even bike riding.

Areas on your body that form blisters and continue to be rubbed every day (like your feet because of the same pair of uncomfortable shoes you always wear to school) may go on to form calluses, which, believe me, you do not want.

At any rate, here are the best ways to avoid getting blisters. The best way to deal with blisters is to avoid getting them altogether.

To avoid getting blisters on your hands, wear the right kind of gloves or protective gear. For instance, you might use work gloves during yard work or palm protectors called “grips” for gymnastics.

To keep your feet blister-free, always select your shoes wisely – and purchase them during afternoon hours when your feet are at their biggest.

Blisters usually just need time to heal on their own, so always keep a blister clean and dry and cover it with a bandage until it is totally gone. While the blister is healing, try to avoid putting pressure on the area or rubbing it at all. By following these tips, hopefully you can remain blister-free. Believe me, they are certainly no fun to deal with.
