Anemarrhena

Anemarrhena (Anemarrhena asphodeloides or Zhi Mu) is rare bitter herb that grows wild in Japan and the northern part of China. Historically known use dates back 200 B.C. The herb plant looks similar to a lily. Three feet from the ground has white six petaled flowers that bloom at night and have a fragrant smell. The plant’s root (rhizomes) and stems have medicinal properties. Rhizomes are large, hard and round with pale – yellowish color inside and dried in the sun. Afterwards, used for medicinal purposes. The plant reaches harvest stage in three years. Amemarrhena is used to treat heat disorders, such as to clear internal heat and provide moisture to the lungs and kidneys. Laboratory studies have shown Anemarrhena 2.5 powder may slow down tuberculosis disease or progression. Effective reducing low-grade fever associated to tuberculosis. However, higher dosage of five percent, appear to be toxic. Laboratory mice given higher dosage of this herb caused their death in controlled testing.

Anemarrhena has been used to treat cystitis infection of the bladder. Studies have shown that this herb effective against Escherichia coli, which commonly causes cystitis in women. Anemarrhena is available by powder or pills. Recommend daily dosage between six to twelve grams per day. Should be taken with warm water on an empty stomach. The herb can be prepared by boiling down to a concentrated broth or tea to be taken internally. However, avoid using cooking utensils containing iron (pots or pans), may adversely alter the medicinal properties. Also, taking iron supplements, multivitamin or multi-mineral supplements containing iron should be taken at least two hours before or after taking the herb.
