Applying Spackle to Ceilings: A Guide

Spackle is a material that is useful in repairing minor cracks and holes on the walls and ceilings of buildings. It is a very versatile material, with the ability to adhere to wood, drywall, and plaster. The three types available to consumers today include heavy paste, lightweight, and light bodied. If the damage is minor, the homeowner may be able to fix their ceilings without using a contractor. For instruction on how to apply Spackle to ceilings, I asked my husband, who happens to be a carpenter.

In order to apply the dry powder, very few materials are needed. In addition to the Spackle, individuals need water, a putty knife or a trowel to smooth the substance on the surface, a hawk, which is like a paint board for craftsmen, plastic to cover exposed surfaces in the room, sandpaper and, of course, a ladder to reach the ceiling. If the ceiling, though, is a popcorn ceiling, a ceiling repair kit may be in order.

Before mixing the water and dry powder, consumers will need to prepare the area that in going to be repaired. The amount of preparation depends on the overall texture of the ceiling and how wide or long the crack is.

Once the area has been prepared, take the amount of Spackle needed and put it in a separate container, such as a bucket. If the whole container will be used, water can be added to the package in which the Spackle was purchased. Add water to the mixture according to the thickness of the compound.

After the desired thickness has been reached, use the trowel or putty knife to scoop out the amount of Spackle needed for the area being fixed. Place this amount on the hawk. Make sure just enough is placed on the hawk because the repairer doesn’t want it to dry too fast.

Apply the Spackle to the crack in the ceiling. Make sure that it is applied according to the design and texture of the surface. This will ensure uniformity and consistency. After all of the cracks have been filled, wait for them to dry.

When the Spackle dries, inspect the ceiling to make sure all cracks have been covered. If the cracks are covered to satisfaction, use a piece of sandpaper to smooth the surface. Sanding the surface is important so that it is even when painted.

Remember, this instruction guide is only useful for minor repairs. If after spackling the cracks come back or the ceiling has wet marks, this may require professional service.
