Are You Correctly Using Your Plunger?

Although a plunger is not the most charming item in your bathroom, it may turn out to be the most useful. If you happen to get a clogged toilet or sink, there is no better tool for the job than a plunger. These tools save many homeowners the cost of calling a plumber to fix a simple problem. However, some people give up to quickly when using a plunger. This may be due to a lack of plunger use knowledge. Here are some tips to help you correctly and effectively use a plunger.

The Right Cup
Plungers come in many different sizes and shapes. Just go to the hardware store and you will be shocked at the variety in which to choose. Make sure you choose a plunger that is large enough to completely cover the drain hole. If it does not, there will not be proper suction and the tool will not work properly.

Block All Other Outlets
If you have a double sink or an adjacent water fixture, you will need to block these before using your plunger. This will help to create a vacuum. Moisten a washcloth and drape it over the extra drains.

Fill with Water
It may sound backward, but you should fill the clogged element (sink) with water. There should be enough to cover the entire plunger cup. Since toilets are already filled with water, ignore this step for a clogged toilet.

Tight Seal
Another way to improve the plunger’s seal is to add some petroleum jelly to the rim of the cup. This will be sure to create the most suction possible.

Pumping
Using up and down strokes, forcefully pump about 20 times. Since most clogs are dislodged on the upstroke, make sure this stroke has enough emphasis.

Don’t give up
If your pumping doesn’t initially work, don’t give up right away. You never know how deep down a clog has settled. It may take 3 or 4 efforts before your clog is let loose.

Plungers are not glamorous, but they do allow us the convenience of caring for our own plumbing problems. There is nothing worse than a clogged toilet or sink, but there would definitely be nothing worse if we had a clogged toilet or sink with no plunger. Don’t take them for granted. If you know how to properly use your plunger, your experiences will be much more successful and pleasant.
