Artist Gives You a Different View
Sherry Giryotas: Journey, a Site Specific Installation at the ArtCentre of Plano, 1039 E. 15th Street started her show Aug. 22nd.
What’s unique about the exhibit?
Hanging upside down boats in a gallery that at first glance looks bare.
“This is a very different art exhibit for us,” said Suze Jones, executive director of the ArtCentre.
And it’s not just boats but Giryotas paintings, as well.
This isn’t the first time Giryotas’ work has taken a different turn. In 2003 she created a piece made out of 1,500 pounds of fragrant beeswax.
Giryotas has been a professional artist for 25 years. She did a sculpture exhibition at Perdue University back in 1999. One other exhibit this year called “Journey” was the manifestation of artistic, sacred space, Giryotas said.
The artist is inspired by the idea of souls traveling to the afterlife in boats according to one sacred faith.
Hanging boats from places like walls and rafters is another favorite curiosity of some, only used for decorative purposes like at Art’s Nautical Woodworks. The boats are handmade piece by piece.
Nancy Rubins is another female artist who loves using boats in her work. With “Big Pleasure Point,” a new commission by the Public Art Fund, her first outdoor sculpture in New York used nautical cast-offs for a colorful array of seaside fun. The sculpture’s title is inspired by the words stenciled on a cache of boats come from the idyllically named Pleasure Point Marina on a resort lake in Southern California.
Hours for Giryotas’ exhibit are Tues.-Sat., 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and admission is free.

The ArtCentre was formerly known as the Cultural Arts Council of Plano and was founded in 1981 as a private non-profit to promote growth and development of emerging community arts groups.
On Nov. 18th the facility is celebrating its 25th anniversary with 25 hours of art from 9 a.m. Oct. 27th to 10 a.m. Oct.28th. Twenty-five days of Haute Art will be celebrated Oct. 17-Nov. 18.
“Death of a Salesman” will be performed through Sept. 24th at the ArtCentre.
At the center you can also hear poetry readings.
In a sea of retail shops the ArtCentre is a welcome retreat according to reviewers.
