Band Review: Gym Class Heroes

Think of your favorite song to dance to; Gym Class Heroes play a better one. Think of your favorite song to sing you to sleep; Gym Class Heroes has a better one. Think of the sexiest man you have ever seen with a curly afro; that’s Gym Class Heroes front man Travis McCoy. Hailing from Geneva, NY and just recently signed to Decaydence, a chain off of Fueled By Ramen, this foursome breeds a smooth transition between rock, pop, rap, and so much more. They have created the fusion of music I think a lot of people really wanted to hear.

This hip new band has taken audiences all over the world by storm. With the sounds of rock, the catchiness of pop, the record label and association to punk, the beats of funk, and the hip hop ballads for the ages; Gym Class Heroes fuse them all together in order to create the unique sound that make them all their own. Travis lays down the smooth vocals and sick rhymes, Disashi Lumumba-Kasongo creates the mad guitar riffs that give their sound the rock influence, Eric Roberts puts the funk and flare that can only be created by the bass, and Matt McGinley lays down the beats that will make you want to bob your head until you go insane.

You can listen to this new generation of music on any of their three full length albums, “For The Kids”, “The Papercut Chronicles”, and “As Cruel As School Children”. Their second album, “The Papercut Chronicles”, was the album that really introduced the world to the sound that is Gym Class Heroes. One of my favorite songs on the album, “Graduation Day”, tells a story that incorporates hate crimes, brotherhood, and suicide, while also relaying the message that everyone is connected somehow in someway. In that same cd is the ever funky “Cupid’s Chokehold”. Bringing in Fueled By Ramen compadre Patrick Stump from the band Fall Out Boy, this song brings out the rock and funk of Gym Class Heroes sound. Not only will that cd have you on your feet, but their just released third album “As Cruel As School Children”, will have you in awe as well. It provides the same Gym Class style and sound and adds new beats, lyrics, and messages; gotta love it! You can check out these fine young musicians on the web or in a city near you when they go on tour. Either way, you will not be disappointed, Gym Class Heroes is quite a force to be reckoned with.
