Barbra Streisand and Ryan O’ Neal Star in the Classic Comedy Film What’s Up Doc?

Director Peter Bogdanovich offers audiences a Who’s On First slapstick comedy steered effortlessly by Barbra Streisand and Ryan O’ Neal, in What’s Up Doc?

From the moment Streisand steps on screen as Judy – cars crash, hotels go up in flames, hostages are taken, and engagements are broken. It’s the same endearing clumsiness she had when she roller-skated into the Ziegfield Follies in Funny Girl.

A broke and aimless Judy spots conservative, uptight, musicologist – Howard, in a hotel and latches on to him like a leech. It’s never really made clear if she does this because he obviously has money or because she’s bored. Whatever the reason, she intends to stay in Howard’s life whether he likes it or not.

As Judy is getting acquainted with Howard a few other guests check into the hotel, all carrying the same red, plaid luggage case as Howard. Right from the beginning we know that someone is after whatever is in one of the luggage cases, but soon, a few more someones come into the picture along with another case containing valuable items.

The bags get misplaced, stolen, and moved by various interested parties; and Howard, his fianc©e Eunice, Judy, and everyone at the hotel get caught up in the confusion.

As Judy and Howard get closer and everyone goes into hot pursuit of the bags, Bogdanovich brings out the classic comedic moments: a street car chase through San Francisco with a rickshaw and a huge fight scene, in which of course; no one really hits who they intend to hit. He uses a style similar to Dick Van Dyke and The Three Stooges, elements that could only bring out the best in O’Neal and Streisand.

Streisand has appeared in several comedies early in her career: Funny Girl, Hello Dolly, The Way We Were, The Owl and the Pussycat and more; and you’ll remember O’ Neal from films such as, Love Story, Paper Moon, and more.

This type of movie is always the answer if you’re in a bad mood, had a bad day, or just feel like watching something light.

This is a must-see classic film. Also check out similar comedy movies: Silver Streak, The Owl and the Pussycat, Funny Girl, and Paper Moon, and any Monty Python movie.
