Beauty Pageant Tips: From Former and Current Pageant Queens

In an effort to prepare my child for her second beauty pageant, I spent some time online looking for tips from former and current beauty pageant queens. Lots of time. Here are the beauty pageant tips that I found most useful.

Beauty Pageant Tip No. 1
Hire a beauty pageant coach:
I noticed that most of the girls who have won beauty pageants have coaches. These coaches charge approximately $100.00 an hour to guide beauty pageant hopefuls to the crown. Personally, I cannot fathom giving anyone $100.00 to coach a ten year old in a beauty pageant. I do feel they probably have good information though as most of them are repeat winners.

Beauty Pageant Tip No. 2
Natural makeup and hair:
Most past beauty pageant winners mention that having a natural look that is age appropriate is the best way to go. A child should look like a child. A teen should look like a teen. An adult should look like an adult. If the beauty pageant contestants are under age 13, there should be no visible makeup at all. Hair should be in a natural style and out of the face.

Beauty Pageant Tip No. 3
Classic interview suit:
Once again, the former and present beauty pageant queens suggest that the interview suit be a classic style, a color that works well for the contestant, and not be too flashy. You do not want your clothing to distract from what you are trying to say.

Beauty Pageant Tip No. 4
Appropriate Evening Gown:
When it comes to the beauty pageant evening gown, the most consistent tip I read was to read the pageant guideline for formal wear. For her first beauty pageant, my daughter and I did not read the guidelines, and she made one of the biggest faux pas she could make. She wore gloves. Of course, 90 percent of the other contestants probably knew she should not wear gloves, but no one bothered to mention it. For the next beauty pageant, the rules said that dress should be long enough so that shoes do not show. Young children through teens should have full skirted dresses not form fitting, was another rule. The rules also stated that ruffles should be kept to a minimum and dresses should be a solid color though trim is allowed. The rules in one beauty pageant do not necessarily apply in the next beauty pageant, so be sure to read the rules before purchasing any clothing. Remember when purchasing your beauty pageant gown, that the dress should compliment, and not distract from the girl.

Beauty Pageant Tip No. 5
Be yourself.
Each list of tips included this one. Judges can see through fake facades and acting, so be yourself. This does not mean to act as if you are at home. You do however; need to be your best self. Be kind to others, show your best manners, but most importantly let your true personality shine.

Beauty Pageant Tip No. 6
Take the interview seriously.
According to former and current beauty pageant queens, the interview can make or break your chances of winning. Therefore, be sure your suit is appropriate, and be mindful of your posture. The most important thing you can do is to maintain eye contact without staring. Also, answer your questions honestly without making anything up. If you do not have an answer, you can say, “I’ve never thought about that before”. If you have not come up with a response in that amount of time, you can say something like, “I’ll have to get back to you on that later”. No matter how flustered or nervous you might be, remember to keep smiling, do not fidget, and “never let ’em see you sweat”.
